By: Amy Loar, Generation SERVE Executive Director

Amy Loar is our new Executive Director! In case you missed it, here is the newsletter where we announced she’d be joining us. This blog post is Amy’s opportunity to introduce herself.

I’m thrilled to be part of an organization that brings families together to do such important work for our community. I love the mission of Generation SERVE – to engage children in volunteerism and empower them to make a difference in their communities.

I feel privileged for the chance to help everyone already doing terrific work for Generation SERVE. My goal is to make even more families aware of the incredible work this organization has done since Marissa first turned her innovative idea into a reality nine years ago.

My family started volunteering at Generation SERVE about a year ago and we have been Family Sponsors since last summer. I have two girls – 3 and 5 years old. My oldest, Ellen, is partial to going to Caritas to prep meals while my younger daughter, Cora, enjoys making rice socks to keep orphaned kittens warm. Cora has been participating in the Little Helpers Learn & Play Pilot Program and has learned so much from the activities. My husband, David, appreciates the opportunity to spend time with the whole family doing meaningful work.

Volunteerism has always been important to me. I started volunteering with my mom when I was a teenager, even though there were limited opportunities to serve in the small town where we lived. I continued volunteering once I moved to Austin for school and haven’t stopped since! That’s why I’m so grateful that Generation SERVE gives me a pathway to instill this value in my children. I look forward to making this opportunity accessible to many, many families! The pathway to service for all ages and stages - from Family Volunteering to the Service Learning Program to the Youth Leadership Programs - provides wonderful opportunities for children and families to grow in their dedication to serving others.

I would like to thank the staff and Board for already welcoming me with open arms and making me feel like part of this team from day one. I look forward to getting to know even more of our families and supporters in the coming weeks and months!

Myself, the staff, the Board, our supporters, all the families who volunteer - each of us plays a pivotal role in helping run this organization, and so I welcome any and all ideas on how to continue to make Generation SERVE thrive. I can be reached anytime at amy@generationserve.org.
