Our Founding Story

Marissa Vogel started a movement in 2009 when, unable to find meaningful volunteer opportunities for her 4 and 6-year-old daughters, she founded Little Helping Hands. Her vision was simple yet powerful: children need real service experiences to develop into adults who care about making a difference.

What began as one mother’s solution evolved into Generation SERVE, an organization engaging youth of all ages in meaningful service across communities. Thanks to Marissa’s leadership and vision, Generation SERVE has now involved more than 40,000 young people and their families, contributing over 100,000 volunteer hours to nearly 200 nonprofit organizations in Central Texas.

The Generation SERVE Board established a Founder’s Fund with Austin Community Foundation honoring Marissa and early supporters. This separate fund will strategically support organizational expansion, innovative programming, staffing, infrastructure building, and capital projects—preserving Marissa’s legacy while fueling Generation SERVE’s future impact.

Hear From Generation SERVE Youth & Families

I think Generation SERVE fosters a culture of volunteerism and community service among families. It also instills values of empathy, responsibility, and civic engagement in children.
- Parent from 2023 Surveys
I love seeing how the big kids model for the younger ones – my kids love shadowing the big kids and working together.
-Parent of 5 and 3 year old volunteers
I appreciate the doors that Generation SERVE opens for our family to volunteer with a variety of organizations. There is no way we would have found these volunteer opportunities without the help of Generation SERVE.
-Parent of 13 and 14 year old volunteers and Teen Leaders
We love serving our community. Not too long ago we needed help like the Hope Food Pantry provides, so this is our chance to give back.
-Parent of 7 and 4 year old volunteers
I feel like Generation SERVE has given me a drive to do good for our community and to just do the tiniest things to make a person’s day better.
-Generation SERVE Teen Leader
I would not be doing the work I am doing today without Generation SERVE! They taught me that taking action to care for those around you is one of the best things you can be doing with your life. I am happy to still be involved with the organization today and all of the wonderful things it does to better the community!
